It’s not enough to just “do business” anymore. It’s not enough to just want to make things so you can make money. As Derek explains in these two videos below¹, there’s nothing special about having an idea and not sharing it, or “squeezing the fun” out of your business just to “maximize profits.”
Unless you are Kim Kardashian (and if you are, could you please link to this on Twitter?), your business was never about you. You’d be smart to remember that.
“We’re clearly a bad judge of our own creations. We should just put it out, and let the world decide.”
“Never forget why you’re doing what you’re doing. Are you helping people? Are they happy? Are you happy? Are you profitable? Isn’t that enough?”
I’ve been lucky enough to trade a few emails with Mr. Sivers. For somebody with so much leadership clout, and with so many successful business ventures, it’s rare that anyone on his level would ever send an email back to someone that’s not their equal.
The business world needs more people like Derek Sivers.
¹ And apparently also in his new book “Anything You Want,” which I haven’t read yet.
